Equal opportunities in life for all special children
Education from Pre-Nursery to Graduation leading ultimately to establishment of a University
HASE was established on 01-01-1993 as a project of Educational Welfare Society for disabled children, registered by Provincial Directorate of Social Welfare, recognized by Federal Ministry of Special Education, Pakistan National Commission for UNESCO, Ministry of Education, Islamabad and documented by University of Punjab as a “Good practicing model of Inclusive Education”
The main branch of Hassan Academy is operational in Mehrabad, Rawalpindi for the past 16 years and has established itself as an institution providing excellent educational services for the disabled children, ranging in age from 4years to 21 years. This achievement of Hassan Academy for Special Education is despite poor resources. The institution is providing educational services to 160 students from local areas as well as far flung areas like Kashmir, Sindh, Bannu, Battgram and Mansehra. These also include children orphaned during the devastating earthquake of 2005. Residential services are provided for 60 such students. Furthermore, the institution provides pick and drop service to 12 students and teachers residing in different parts of Rawalpindi city. However, almost 40 students require pick and drop services and some are so poor that they will not be able to pay for the service. The students are charged according to socioeconomic status. The students belonging to well off families are charged more to subsidize the poorer students. It is, however, stressed that there is immense pressure on the institution to enroll more students (500) as the government facilities are unable to provide for this underprivileged group of society. Quality educational services for the disabled are in high demand and this is proved by the fact that almost 500 students are on the waiting list. The institution functions on the principle of not refusing admission to any deserving disabled person; however, lack of resources is a constant problem.
The special children have special needs like any other. They need communication skills, love, attention and a sense of belonging, encouragement friendship, freedom, culture and education. The things combine to form a complete child.
It is obligatory for all civilized societies to look after and care for their special children. If properly guided and educated these special children can be turned into useful citizens and can play an active role in society. It is proposed that a network of educational institutions be established with the help of the government, public and commercial organizations to change this situation through establishment of a network of educational and vocational institutions for the disabled in Pakistan.
HASE offers students the unique opportunity to form a specific identity that focuses on strengths and unique talents instead of disabilities. We provide an education that is tailored to meet the individual needs that address the total child in an ideal culture of norms, acceptance and belonging. We have a national reputation for excellence in special education.
HASE provides educational settings which promotes healthy social relationships between special and normal children at all levels and reduces the physical distance between them through equal participation in social activities.
HASE has an excellent arrangement where special children are considered as important as their hearing peers and provides natural environment to accept and to be accepted by their peers, to adjust emotionally to acquire a sense of competency and independence and above all for rehabilitation.
Special children and normal children are being taught simultaneously in the same premises. Some of them are partially integrated whereas others are fully integrated depending on the degree of their hearing loss and type of disability. This experience and technique has inculcated a positive psychological impact upon the special children.
